Barbeque Cook-off Guntersville, Alabama
Alabama State BBQ Championship
DoRagQ wins Grand Champion at Guntersville, AL
By Ronnie Harwell. Ph.B.
KCBS
Back in 2006, there were few thoughts of competing at the level of winning a Grand Champion at any sanctioned barbecue competition. “Just for kicks” Billy told me that he and a friend decided to “test the water” and compete in two contests. And since that second competition, Wireless Plus has been a faithful and very much appreciated sponsor. Then just one week before they were scheduled to cook their first event of the 2007 season, his friend informed him he intended to pursue other hobbies. Billy thought to himself “Okay, now what do I do?” However a few nights later while enjoying several Early Times concocted libations, his neighbor Gary indicated that Billy could count on him and they cooked in twelve events that year. It was at the second competition of 2007 that Billy and Gary first met Richard, who was cooking in Winchester, TN while scoping out that event for a potential sanctioned event in his hometown of Lewisburg, TN. It would be several more weeks before their paths crossed again. But later that year in Smyrna, TN their paths did cross again and during that weekend Richard was invited to cook with them in Clarksville, TN. Billy tells me “the rest is DoRagQ history.”

ABA Barbecue Series

After all, not too much travel time was involved going to that event since they live just up the road in Owasso, Okla. But what they witnessed got their competitive juices flowing. Scot has been cooking “for a long time,” although “not on a professional level.” ......Read More |
